Dr. Otto Warburg — on the Prime Cause of Cancer Being

a Change in Metabolic Mode From Oxygen Respiration

to Glycolysis

The mystery of what is the PRIME cause of Cancer was figured out a century ago, but its application to avoiding Cancer has lagged behind. According to Nobel Prize winning scientist, Dr. Otto Warburg, there are prime and secondary causes of disease... by a prime cause Dr. Warburg means a cause that is present in every case of the disease. (Read Dr. Warburg’s thesis on the prime cause of cancer.) Dr. Warburg states that cancer has countless secondary causes; but only one prime cause. Summarized in just a few words, the prime cause of cancer is a metabolic disease — the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by the fermentation of sugar for energy creation. This metabolic switchover from respiration to glycolysis, Dr. Warburg maintains, results when there is insufficient oxygen to meet the energy needs of a cell through oxygen respiration. Continuing on this subject, Dr. Warburg states that all normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. A Warburg quote, “...all normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between normal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarcely picture a greater difference. Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms, namely, a fermentation of glucose.” Common sense would dictate that a prime cause should be dealt with first and foremost. Therefore, the prime counter to the prime cause of cancer would be to increase cellular oxygen. Of course, that isn’t what is being considered in today’s cancer prevention research. Instead, endless number of secondary causes are being explored while the prime cause is of little interest to most cancer researchers. Watch a modern scientist, Dr. Thomas Seyfried, (below) discussing the Warburg effect, which is a cell’s discontinuance of oxygen respiration and reverting over to a glycolysis of sugar due to the lack of oxygen in a cell.
Dr. Otto Warburg was a German scientist who lived from 1883 to 1970. He earned doctor degrees in medicine and in chemistry and was at his prime in regard to scientific research from 1920 to 1960. He was one of the world’s greatest scientists, but mostly shunned by the Western World since he worked for decades in Hitler’s Germany. Dr. Otto Warburg was nominated for a Nobel Prize forty-seven times (more than any other person) and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1931 for his discovery of the “nature and mode of action of the respiratory enzyme”. He devoted most of his scientific career to the study of cell physiology and metabolism, including the aberrant metabolism of tumors (cancer). His Nobel Prize was the result of years of study and seeking understanding of the oxidation- reduction activities in the mitochondria. Dr. Warburg relied heavily on properly designed experiments, and making sure that these experiments could be duplicated by others. He was a pure scientist, preferring laboratory outcomes to scientific studies. His studies could be mainly summarized as showing that oxygen respiration, generating ATP energy from fuel in the mitochondria, is the basis of all healthy mammalian life. As oxygen respiration is lost due to mitochondrial damage or lack of cellular oxygen, tumors and cancer develops. “Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar.” Dr. Otto H. Warburg in Lecture.
